A Plaque and Medal commemorating the restoration of New Place, A Lutyens House

In 1981 my wife Patricia and I accepted the post as managers of Simpact Management Centre located at New Place a Lutyens designed house in Hampshire

New Place was built as a wedding present to Captain Franklyn by his parents. As with a number of fine houses it became a school and then the home of the Simpact Management Centre. In 1985 the owners of the management centre decided it was time to organize a restoration of the property and gardens. As a member of the executive team I was involved with the restoration.

In 1985 three important events happened, the completion of the restoration of New Place and the acceptance by the British Art Medal Society of my proposal that New Place should be the venue for their Second Annual Meeting and conference. Amongst the attendees I met was Ron Dutton one of the driving forces behind the resurgence of the art medal in the UK.

19th Century, Base Metal & Silver Tokens

The Government’s solution to the late 18th century blight of underweight and unredeemable copper tokens had been to put full weight regal pence back into circulation. This was initially, in 1797, with massive “cartwheel” penny and two penny pieces, followed, in 1799, by large regal halfpennies and farthings. The public took the new money at once with enthusiastic disregard for the uncomfortable drag on pocket and purse caused by a shilling’s worth of two penny pieces.

The economy may have stumbled into the 19th century encumbered by a great weight of change, but least it seemed free of the fraudsters. On the other hand, Britain faced another 15 years of warfare to defeat Bonaparte, while many of the mills and manufacturers of the Midlands and the north worked flatout to meet demands for the weapons and accoutrements of war.

English Dollar 8 Reale Carolus IIII

War and rumours of French invasion caused hoarding of gold and silver on a huge scale in Britain before Napoleon was finally defeated at Waterloo.

The Royal Mint, in the throes of a move to new premises, and still using antiquated machinery, could not keep pace with demand for replacement silver coins.

As a temporary measure the government decided on an emergency issue of silver tokens. The Mint used Spanish pieces of eight captured when towns were looted in the Peninsula War, or taken at sea from Spanish ships, and countermarked them with a small bust of George III stamped on the neck of the Spanish king. (In a single spectacular engagement at sea a Spanish treasure ship carrying silver worth 3,000,000 Spanish dollars fell into English hands in 1804).

A Tudor Groat Revisited

Those who collect coins of the Tudor period may probably say that to see one Mary Tudor groat is to see them all.

Mary came to the throne on 19th July 1553 after the death of her half-brother Edward VI, marrying Philip of Spain in the July of the following year. The coinage changed on her marriage, thus the mint had barely twelve months’ production of coins in her name alone. The only fine silver coinage of that 12 month period was the groat, half-groat and penny, the two smaller coins being particularly rare. All have the portrait of Mary looking left
